Recently, I answered an interesting question for Got Questions Ministries. This was not the first time I was asked about this, and thought it would be good to share my thoughts here as well.
“How can I love the trinity if God is three? How does that work? Every time I try to love Him, I end up focusing on one of the persons more than the others? How do I love each person of the Trinity equally and harmoniously?”
Female, North America, New Christian, 19 years old
Thank you for your question.
Loving each person of the Trinity separately can be a desire many Christians have. The reason is that human beings think more one or two dimensionally, whereas God is vastly multi-dimensional beyond what we could even imagine. But it is important to remember that our love for God is ultimately centered on His nature and character, rather than a specific focus on each person of the Trinity individually. It is natural for us to have a personal connection with one person of the Trinity more than another, however we can recognize and appreciate the roles and interactions between each person of the Trinity. Each person of the Trinity has played a significant part in our salvation and relationship with God — separately and as a whole.

Look at the diagram of the Trinity in this Got Questions page: https://www.gotquestions.org/Trinity-Bible.html [image on left]. This is the best way we can describe the relationship between all three members. The Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are not each other; but they together encompass God. Now, take that diagram and replace “God,” with “Human;” “the Father,” with “Body;” the Son,” with “Soul;” and the “Holy Spirit,” with “Spirit.” When you think in terms like this, you can start to visualize it. As a human being you don’t love your body more than your soul, or your spirit more than your body. You love yourself as a human being: all three in one. Now, we as humans can focus on one part at a time, and at the same time love the entirety of us. I may exercise, eat healthy, and maintain good posture because I am focusing on my physical body. Another time I may focus on my soul and concentrate on reading, Bible Study, and prayer. But in the human self, each part is affected by each other, and each part needs each other. Exercise helps me focus and clears my thinking. Praying helps me not worry so much and though it is good for my soul, it lowers my blood pressure and lessens stress on the body. They all have different roles, but all need each other and make up what it means to be human.
God is made up of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. You may focus on the Son and worship God in thankfulness to what Christ did for you on the cross and suffering in your place. Another time you may focus on the Holy Spirit as the helper, thanking Him for leading and guiding you in your decisions and understanding of God’s Word. You may focus on the Father and worship Him in thankfulness for sending His Son in our place and not giving up on us and leaving us in our sin. But all three though separate, need each other, and without them as a whole, God wouldn’t exist.
Here is an example: who raised Jesus from the dead? Answer: all three persons of the Trinity. The Bible clearly states that Jesus raised Himself (John 2:19-22), the Father raised Jesus (Galatians 1:1), the Holy Spirit raised Him (Romans 8:11), and God in general raised Jesus from the dead (Romans 10:9; 1 Peter 1:20-21).
