1. In The Beginning…

In the beginning…

Nothing makes sense unless you start from the beginning; whether stories, documentaries, movies, a witness who saw a crime take place, or even a place of learning. Most people don’t start reading a murder mystery at the end to see who done it before the crime even took place. The same goes for the Bible.

Let’s look through the Bible and start from the very beginning — the very first line in the Book of Genesis, which means beginnings.

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.

Genesis 1:1 NKJV

Here, right from the start, we see that God created the heavens and the earth by Jesus Christ (Colossians 1:16). Jesus was with God the Father and the Holy Spirit from all eternity. Everything was made by Him (John 1:1-5; 14). The Bible tells us that God merely spoke and created everything we see in six literal days. Here is what happened each day.

  • Day 1 — God Said, “Let there be light,” and there it came. He separated the light from the darkness and called the light, “Day” and the darkness “Night.” This light was from a source other than the sun, which wasn’t created till day 4.
  • Day 2 — God made an expanse like space and separated the waters above the expanse from the waters below.
  • Day 3 — God caused the waters under the expanse to come together, so that dry ground appeared. He told the land to bring forth plants and trees.
  • Day 4 — God spoke and made the sun, moon, and stars for light, and to mark seasons, days, and years. From these, man could create a calendar, chart the heavens, and use it to guide ships at night.
  • Day 5 — God created animals that live in the water and fly in the air.
  • Day 6 — God spoke and created land animals, each according to their kind, to roam the earth. From the largest dinosaur to the smallest reptile. That includes his very special creation — human beings. Adam and Eve were the first man and woman from where all other humans ever existed came from and created according to His own image and likeness. That means we were created “as” His image. Since God is spirit (John 4:24) and cannot be seen or heard with the human ear, He placed humankind as living symbols of Himself on Earth to represent His reign. We were created to reflect His majesty on Earth. He also created humankind with ethical, moral, and intellectual abilities: the ability to love, create, rule, care for and protect, just to name a few. God, also reveals something about Himself to us, that He is more than one. Since we are made in the image of God alone, it cannot mean angels. God is revealed that He is One God in three Persons — Father, Son, and Holy Spirit (Genesis 11:7–8; Matthew 28:19).

Therefore, God created the entire Earth, the heavens, and all that is created, He created it. On the seventh day God wasn’t tired that He needed to take a break, but that He ceased from the work in that He was satisfied with what was accomplished. God is never weary (Isaiah 40:28, 29). When God had completely finished creating, He pronounced it “very good.” There was no death, disease, sickness, violence, thorns, weeds, or fear. Everything was perfect. He then rested and stopped His creation on the seventh day and even now upholds His creation (Colossians 1:17).

Did you notice how God created everything? He spoke everything into existence. That is incredible.
