Unicorns are mythical beasts resembling a horse or deer with a single spiral corn projecting from its forehead and has been known to barf rainbows. They don’t exist. They are fairytales of people’s imagination: unless you are talking about unicorns in the Bible which are a one-horned rhinoceros, which was totally real.
Today, a unicorn is a person who is so rare in their beliefs, that it almost seems mystical or at the very least extrememly hard to find. Something that just doesn’t make sense; and by that definition in today’s society, we see great herds of them.
Walking back to my car from the Iowa Right to Life March, I stumbled across one and I really had to ask some questions. We were both leaving the march at the same time. He was in front of me and I noticed his tattoos. The one that really struck me was all four Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. They were really bright and colorful, and you could tell the artist had an amazing attention to detail. Tattoos are really easy to get into a conversation. People love talking about them, and many have very hidden meanings. So I proceeded to talk to him.
“Hey man, nice tats. That’s got to be the coolest TMNT tat I’ve ever seen.”
“Thanks! I got them not too long ago.” He then proceeded to show me more of the ones he had, lifting up his sleeve and arms. “This one is a bass cleff, this one is John 8:12, and this one says, SAVED.”
“Wow, those are really cool. Are you a Christian? Where do you go to church?” He said he was and that he went to a church that sounded like a Roman Catholic Church, and really suprised me. “Isn’t that a Roman Catholic Church?”
“Yup. I’ve been there several years. I believe Jesus is my Savior, He died on a cross so that I can live, and saved me by His blood. Repented of my sins and put my trust and faith in Him.”
“Wow, you’re a unicorn. I’ve never met a saved Roman Catholic, or at least one that believed he was saved. Most of the time they say, ‘I think so’ or ‘I hope so.'” He laughed. “Is there anything else to getting saved? I mean, where does baptism, the Pope, indulgences, worship of Mary and the saints fit in to Jesus is the only way, the truth and the life. That no man can come to the Father but by Him?”
He looked puzzled and then I explained what sin was by using the ten commandments as a mirror for him to look at and see his sinfulness. “Yeah, I have a friend that shared all that with me and I totally agree with it.” We were nearing the corner where we would part ways. I handed him a million-dollar bill with the gospel and pointed to the QR code that will take him to a YouTube video to explain it a bit better. I wish I had more time to talk, but prayerfully he will think about what I gave him and the talk we had. As I crossed the street I watched him read the entire tract and then activate the QR code with his phone. I’m not saying that this man wasn’t saved, but I wonder why stay in a system that is against a gospel that is grace alone through faith alone in Christ alone according to Scripture alone for the glory of God alone?
I love conversations like these. It’s amazing when God puts someone in your path to talk to and makes it extrememly easy. Like putting a golf ball on a tee. All you gotta do is hit it. No restrictions, no grass to get in the way, and no sand traps or hills. It’s really that easy.

Thanks for sharing, Frank. I’ve encountered a few Catholics like this. Are they genuinely saved or just parroting evangelical lingo? How can a genuinely saved person stay in a church that teaches justification by works and that it’s the sin of presumption for a person to believe they are saved?

I agree. As an ex-catholic myself I don’t see how a person filled with the Holy Spirit can genuinely stay in the Catholic Church and not be bothered. It was a really short conversation because we were walking to our cars after an event. But I gave him a gospel tract with a video attached to it. I watched him read it and use his phone on the QR code before getting into his car.
