Designed in part with my friend, Jake Fees, the logo for this website fully represents the meaning and purpose behind this ministry. As Evangelists, we have a two-fold ministry: Restoring Sinners & Equipping Saints. No matter where I go, I will be doing either of these things simultaneously.
The logo is black and white not to be boring, but because the Bible is black and white. There are no “grey areas” in the Word of God. Sin is sin, God’s Word is true, and there is only heaven and hell in eternity.
Pens
For the most part, this website is a writing ministry. I am a deep thinker, and love to share my thoughts in written form. Through writing I not only help those who don’t know Christ to think about eternal things, as well as equipping saints for the work of the ministry.
Wrench
Even though this project started as a writing / handyman website, combining my love for writing and repairing broken things, I kept the wrench portion because it fit more in line with restoring sinners.
Like restoring an antique automobile; sharing Christ, restoring sinners, and discipleship takes much work, time, and effort. Trust me, I know. I tried to restore a 1946 Ford pickup my uncle gave me and I failed miserably. It takes the right tools, parts, and know-how to get the job done. It takes the effort of more than one person, with different skillsets. Like restoring an automobile, many people give up before they even start because they haven’t counted the cost and what it takes to finish it. But those who finally get the job done look back at all the effort and money it took, and can be proud of their accomplishment. To them — it was all worth it.
Tip of the spear
The quill of the pen has a double meaning that it is not only a pen — but the tip of the spear.
First, it is a phrase used in military operations to mean the first soldiers to go into combat. Those on the front lines give the sudden and overwhelming use of combat force to pierce an enemy’s first line of defense. It is the first and most meaningful action in an offensive. Much of my evangelism is close hand-to-hand combat against the devil trying to win the sinner over through one-on-one witnessing.
In civilian usage or business world, it can mean the first to venture into a new endeavor — a trailblazer. Many times, I’ve prayed and have gotten prompted by the Holy Spirit to do something. This website is one of them. Most of the time I have no clue what the Lord has in mind, I just need to be a willing vessel for him to be used. He knows, and I don’t necessarily need to as long as I can back it up with Scripture. When the Lord prompted me to do things out of my comfort zone like open-air-preach, read the Bible to a quadriplegic for two months, or take a tract with me to work, God had used it mightily for His glory. As I plan my day, God directs my steps (Proverbs 16:9), and He blazes the trail for me.
Both of these uses can be equally terrifying and scary for most people. Others are counting on you, and there are a million ways of failing and fewer ways of succeeding. My friend Paul and I were the first ones to do open air preaching at the Des Moines Farmer’s Market before anyone else did. Not only that, but evangelism is confronting Satan where he is at, invading his turf and trying to win souls to Christ; not staying behind the doors of the church and inviting people to come. Going out and doing battle in a world that hates God is not easy. It is scary, painful, and also very rewarding. Soldiers are skillful and it is very rewarding when he or she overcomes fears, takes up challenges, and wins.
As an evangelist, I am to go first. I am not to give anyone an assignment I would not do myself. We are to be leaders and examples. We are to go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature; not invite the world into church.
The tip of the spear is a tool in the soldier’s hand. It is the first part of the weapon that collides head on into the enemy. They need to be sharpened, the soldier needs to know how to use it, and it can be his most valuable asset. If there is anything that I can do to help you sharpen your skills in sharing your faith, please let me know.
As you can see it’s not perfect, and neither am I
If you look closely at the logo, you can see that it is not perfect. The words are not all lined up perfectly, the (.com) is slightly smaller than the rest of the website URL, Restoring and Saints is not lined up side-by-side, and the dot between sinners and equipping is not lined up with the pen on the bottom. There’s a reason behind that.
This is to show that I am not perfect. Just like you I make mistakes, I’m not completely lined up with all denomination’s beliefs (including my own) and I don’t have it all together. But when you look at the logo, you can read it and understand what it’s trying to say. To see the mistakes, I’m sure you wouldn’t have even noticed them if I hadn’t said anything; and I am the same way. But they don’t get in the way of getting my point across.
Remember, I am just an average Joe helping other average Joes, and Josephines, how to be all they can be in Christ.
