2. God Created Us Humans For…

The Bible records that on the sixth day of creation, God made the first man (Adam) and woman (Eve), in His own image. All of humanity that ever existed came from these two people (Genesis 3:20; Acts 17:26). Since we are part of that creation, and God created everything good and perfect. His creation pleased Him. God created us for…

His pleasure

Yes, God created human beings for His pleasure.

“You are worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honor and power; For You created all things, And by Your will they exist and were created.”

Revelation 4:11 NKJV

Colossians 1:16 says, “All things were created by Him and for Him.”

Humanity wasn’t created to entertain God, nor provide amusement for Him. It gives Him pleasure to create. God is a personal being and gives Him pleasure to have a personal relationship with us, His creation.

Being made in the image and likeness of God (Genesis 1:27), human beings have the ability to know God and therefore love Him, worship Him, serve Him, and fellowship with Him. God did not create human beings because He needed them. As God, He needs nothing. In all eternity past, He felt no loneliness, so He was not looking for a “friend.” He loves us, but this is not the same as needing us.

If we had never existed, God would still be God: the unchanging, uncreated, perfect One — the I Am. “The Lord is God; besides him there is no other.” (Deuteronomy 4:35). When God created the universe, He did what pleased Himself, and we get to benefit from that.

His purpose

We were created to glorify God, worship Him, and enjoy Him forever.

Recognizing the complete sovereignty and holiness of God, we are amazed that He would take man and crown him “with glory and honor” (Psalm 8:5) and that He would condescend to call us “friends” (John 15:14-15). He created us for His pleasure so that we, as His creation, would have the pleasure of knowing Him.

The purpose for which God created human beings is multifaceted. Here are a few:

A relationship with Him

God created human beings to have a personal and intimate relationship with Him. We were designed to know, love, and worship God (Genesis 1:27; Revelation 4:11). Through this relationship we can experience His love, grace, and guidance in our lives through the Holy Spirit.

Reflect God’s image

Human beings were created in the image and likeness of God (Genesis 1:26-27). This means that we have the capacity to reflect God’s character such as love, kindness, justice, and creativity. We are called to live in a way that reflects God’s nature to the world.

Enjoy God’s creation

God created everything in the world not only for His purpose, but for our enjoyment and stewardship (Genesis 1:28-30). We are called to appreciate and take care of the earth and its resources in a godly manner.

Fulfill our individual purpose

God has specific plans and purposes for each one of us. He has given us all unique gifts, talents, and opportunities to serve Him and make a positive impact in the world (Ephesians 2:10; 1 Peter 4:10-11). We are to use these to bring glory to God and bless others.

To have eternal life with Him

God’s ultimate purpose is for us to be with Him forever in eternal fellowship. Through each person’s journey and calling looks different, the ultimate goal is to have that fellowship with Him now, and forever. Our purpose is found in a personal relationship with God and seeking His will for our lives.

God did not create us because He needed us, was lonely, or needed something to pass the time. He is God and in need of nothing.

God did not create “peers” equal to Himself, otherwise He would not be the One, True, Living God. “The Lord is God; besides Him there is no other” (Deuteronomy 4:35).

What does this mean for us humans?

God created us with purpose, and intent. Not only that, we were His special creation much different than other created animals. We were to live with God and enjoy Him forever. Since He created us, in a sense He owns us.

Let’s say that I made wooden pens like the ones on the homepage for a purpose. What is the purpose of a pen? It’s to write something, correct? So, if I place it on a piece of paper and walk away for a while, will it fulfill its purpose? No. Huh, maybe I need to take the cap off and put it back on the paper. Will it then fulfill its purpose then? No… why?

The pen can only fulfill its purpose in life when it’s in its master’s hand.

So, what do we as humans have to do? We have to surrender our life to the Master’s hand, and only then can we fulfill our purpose in life. We are the pen; He is the one who writes.

Let’s say I am writing with those pens and one day they don’t write anymore. What do I do then? Well, I need to fill it up. So, I change out the ink cartridge; much like us being filled with the Holy Spirit to fulfill the purpose in our lives. It doesn’t work if there is no ink.

But suppose that no matter what I do, I cannot get one of those pens to write, or worse it breaks and the parts are irreplaceable. What then? Well, I can throw it out or throw it in a fire and burn it to ash.

“But you can’t do that,” you say. “That’s mean and cruel. How can you just throw it out?”

Why is that cruel? Since I own the pen, and it is not fulfilling its purpose, I can do anything I want with it. I made it and its mine. Right?

Since God created you — You belong to Him.

Here’s what the Bible says about what God owns:

A Psalm of David. The earth [is] the LORD’s, and all its fullness, The world and those who dwell therein.

Psalm 24:1 NKJV

The heavens are yours, and the earth is yours; everything in the world is yours–you created it all.

Psalm 89:11 NLT

For “the earth is the LORD’s, and everything in it.”

1 Corinthians 10:26 NLT

Everything and everyone, including the person you see in the mirror every morning — belongs to God. The Lord owns it all. You were created with a purpose, and God wants to fill you and make you useful as you surrender to Him. This is vitally important before we go any further. Because since God created you, and owns you…
